Quebec City has gone through a lot of changes in the past years — for the better good of the destination. Growing up in Quebec City, I was able to witness the massive change in some industries throughout the years. There have been huge efforts coming from everywhere in the tourism industry. The tourism industry is better than ever in Quebec City and it shows — many travelers hailing from all around the world want to come to Quebec City and the region is mentioned in many top cities articles on the web.

With this important rise in tourism, the region had to come up with a long-term solution to be able to properly accommodate travelers in their installations such as the airport.

With the passenger in mind, YQB 2018, that is now known as the most important project of the airport history, is setting the ground for many years to come and thus opening tourism possibilities for Quebec City and its region.

I was lucky enough to discover the new terminal before it was opened to the public and here are the main points I liked about it.

What may once was a confusing itinerary for some travelers has now turned into a very quick and easy flow. As soon as you get to the airport, you’ll see how easy it is to find what you’re looking for with the new signage system.

In addition to that, the passenger has now the possibility to automate its visit to the airport with the help of self-serve check-in kiosk and automated self-service customs kiosks.

The checkpoint area is bigger than ever and is comparable to larger airports I’ve visited around the world.

New waiting zone at Quebec City Airport

Once you go through the checkpoint, you’ll then arrive in the new terminal and the first view is really amazing in my opinion. The new terminal has been thought and designed by GLCRM, an architecture firm based in Quebec City. Everything has been designed to have a unique look that resembles no other airport.

Design and passenger in mind

To give this unique look to the new terminal, they used cool colours and geometric shapes that will remind the passenger that he’s indeed in Quebec City, a city that is known for its long and harsh winters.

One of my favourite part is the constellation that hangs from the ceiling, such a beautiful piece that you can see from every side in the terminal. If you want to see the compass, you’ll have to find the right spot in the terminal where all the pieces align. Such a nice and playful touch for the passenger!

New food offerings at Quebec City Airport

It’s a fact: airport food is not necessarily known to be the best bang for your buck (or your stomach). That’s why Quebec City Airport is coming up with bigger food courts that will offer a wider variety of meals.

Starting with local restaurateur Nourcy in its magnificent Ilôt Bar right at the center of the new terminal, Quebec City Airport will have local and international concessions where you’ll find a nice meal while you’re waiting for your flight. I can’t wait to try Nourcy at the airport because I used to go there almost on a daily basis when I used to work at Apple.

For coffee lovers out there, I’ve been told a Starbucks is set to open in the new terminal quite soon. Amazing news, since the only coffee offer right now is Tim Hortons!

Stores

If you’ve traveled around North America a bit, you’ll be familiar with the Relay convenience store that is in pretty much every large airport on the continent.

For any passenger that is into duty-free shopping, know that the duty-free store known as The Loop has now quadrupled in size, from 100 sq. meters to 400 sq. meters. It will feature local brands such as Bizou, but also international brands such as Chanel, Lancôme, Dior & Givenchy.

Charging stations for smartphones and tablets

Whenever I find myself waiting at the airport, I love to charge my different devices — perhaps use them while they’re charging. If you travel often like me, you’ll know that most airports are not equipped in terms of power outlets. You’ll often find people lying on the ground in the most random areas of the airport, begging for that power source.

Quebec City Airport new terminal is the total opposite. There are power outlets basically everywhere. From what I’ve seen, every outlet comes with two regular plugs and two USB plugs, enough to satisfy the most technological passenger — like me!

New customs area that is much more user-friendly at Quebec City Airport

The new customs area will ease the passenger flow when he arrives at Quebec City Airport with the automated kiosks. Perfect when you want to get to your hotel room after a long flight!

Looking to the future of Quebec City Airport: U.S. customs preclearance facility

With all this new stuff going on at Quebec City Airport that really puts the airport in a world-class/international level, the next logical step to be even more international would be to finally have a preclearance facility. Nothing is set in stone, but since it has been announced by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau back in 2016, that would be the next logical step for the airport. Now, we just have to wait!
